A100 HAA (Hydroxyalkyl amide) test report

1.Introduction

 

There are two curing agents for outdoor pure polyester powder,TGIC (triglycidyl isocyanurate) and HAA (Hydroxyalkyl amide). Due to toxicity of gene mutagenesis, TGIC has been restricted to use or prohibit to use in many countries and regions.As a replacement for the TGIC,HAA will be faster development, and will become the main curing outdoor pure polyester powder agent.

 

In addition to non-toxic, the activity of HAA is stronger than that of TGIC, and the curing temperature is 20 degrees lower than that of TGIC, as long as it is cured at 180 degrees and 15 minutes,so the activity of pure polyester resin which match with HAA can be not so strong.At present, there are many polyesters can match with HAA,the called primid curing polyester.The acid value of polyester is lower than TGIC curing polyester low, only 20 - 30.

 

In theory, the hydroxyl of HAA can react with hydroxyl of various acid value polyester resins,but different performance of the reaction.We tested the curing effect of HAA curing polyester, TGIC curing polyester, 6 to 4 polyester react with HAA.The test result is as following,hope can know more about HAA,and give reference to powder coating plant when choose material and make formulation.

 

2.Experiment

 

Experiments with Yantai Donghui 30A twin screw extruder.Extrusion temperature at 110-120 degrees, speed is 210 R / min, sample baking conditions is 180 degrees 15 minutes, there are two kinds of model 0.5mm cold rolled steel plate for testing adhesion and impact strength, 0.3mm tin plate is used to test the bending properties.

 

The test will be taken by following steps:

At first, test the curing effect of HAA with different polyester.

We tested 4 HAA curing polyesters, 7 TGIC, 4 6/4 polyesters. The manufacturers acid value are shown in table one.

Secondly,comparison test of three manufacturers’ HAA and observe the different effect of different manufacturer.

Thirdly,pinhole elimination.

 

The weathering resistance of HAA has been tested by many large companies at home and abroad, which is equal to TGIC. This experiment focuses on the weak points of HAA, that is, appearance leveling, yellowing and pinhole. This is also the concern for powder factories and technicians.

3. the results of the test are as follows:

(1) polyester adaptability: A100 can be cured by HAA special polyester, TGIC polyester, 6/4 polyester .

2: flow leveling: HAA polyester leveling is best, followed by TGIC polyester (also better). Part of 6/4 polyester and A100 curing are poorly leveled, and the surface is wrinkled orange peel, but the 6055 level of Zhongfa is very smooth, 327D of Youbang is also good. (it is noteworthy that, although HAA can be used as a curing agent for 6/4 polyester to reduce cost, it has a reflection that coating is easily powdered.)

Dosage: the amount of A100 is 5% of HAA special polyester, 6% of TGIC polyester, 7% of 6/4 polyester.

 

The pinhole: adding 1% degassing agent or defoaming agent, coating less than 100 microns, no pinhole, flat powder film thickness is generally 70 to 80 microns, so HAA powder pinhole can be solved, no problem.

 

The contrast: Wuhan Yincai A100, Nanhai T105,San deli 552 comparison test, the effect of three kinds of HAA curing agent, leveling of Wuhan Yincai A100 somewhat better.

 

4. The specific test situation is as follows

4.1 A100 curing HAA special polyester

The experiment tested 4 types of HAA special polyester. The formula and results are as follows:

Conclusion:The special-purpose polyester HAA of these four manufacturers react with A100 can achieve excellent leveling and good airborne performance. Zhongfa 9337 and Shenjian 5811 yellowing slightly.

 

4.2 A100 curing with TGI special-purpose polyester

Conclusion: TGIC polyester can be cured with HAA curing agent, and better leveling and mechanical properties can be obtained. The surface flow is a little worse than the HAA polyester, but it is still better. Zhongfa 9335, 3383, 9000,Qingtian Sanli yellowing is better.

 

4.3 A100 curing with 6/4 Polyester

Conclusion: As to the 6/4 polyester from these 4 manufacturers, Zhongfa 6055 leveling good Youbang 327D leveling is not bad, both for matt powder.Leveling of the other 2 manufacturers is not good,suitable for wrinkles sand grain powder. It is important to note that the HAA curing agent can solidify the 6/4 polyester, but its weatherability and the long-term stability of the mechanical properties of the film still remain to be investigated.

 

4.4 Gel time changes when A100 curing with different types polyester

The experiment tested the gel time of A100 react with HAA polyester,TGIC polyester,6/1 polyester,the formulation and result is as following:

Conclusion:Gel time of HAA polyester is long,which with 6/4 polyester is short.Because the activity of HAA is strong, the activity of polyester in reaction with HAA should be weaker.

 

4.5 Comperison of three manufaturers’HAA curing agent

The experimental tests Wuhan Yincai A100,Nanhai T105 , San Deli 552 these three HAA curing agents, the formula and the results are as follows:

Conclusion: the curing affect has no significant between the three HAA curing agent, can good react with polyester, among which Wuhan Yincai A100 leveling somewhat better.

 

4.6 pinhole

HAA react with polyester will release water molecules which easily cause pinholes.We tested how to eliminate pinholes,and the result shows that pinhole will appear when add Benzoin separately,but eliminated when add 0.5 - 1% defoaming agent.The film thickness control in 90 microns is better, greater than 100 microns if adding defoaming agent will have a pinhole

 

Note: A100 is the type of HAA curing agent produced by Wuhan Yincai Technology Co.,Ltd, its advantage is that the flow leveling is better, the current capacity is 1000 tons per year.
